MATTEO MELA, guitar

Decca artist, Matteo Mela is one of the most active Italian guitarists on the international scene.  He trained in Cremona with Giovanni Puddu and for chamber music at the Piano Academy of Imola with Dario de Rosa and Pier Narciso Masi.

In the nineties, in duo with Giampaolo Bandini, he achieved the first prize in some of the most prestigious international chamber music competitions (Caltanissetta, Gubbio, Palmi, Perugia classico).  After this experience, in 2004 together with Lorenzo Micheli he forms the Soloduo guitar duo, an ensemble that has already traveled hundreds of thousands of kilometers across Asia, Europe and America, and has been welcomed everywhere - by Carnegie Hall in New York to the Konzerthaus in Vienna, from Sejong Hall in Seoul to Concergebouw in Amsterdam - as one of the best bands ever heard. Of one of their concerts, the Washington Post wrote: "Extraordinarily sensitive, with effortless command and an almost unbearable delicacy of touch, the duo's playing was nothing less than rapturous - profound and unforgettable musicianship of the highest order".

Their latest album titled Beethoven for two is released by Decca records.

Particularly interested in chamber music, Matteo regularly collaborates with musicians such as Enrico Bronzi, Davide Carmarino, Marco Frezzato, Renata Fusco, Per Arne Glorvigen, Clemens Hagen, Giulio Plotino, Ivan Rabaglia, the Alea Ensemble and the Byron quartet. His latest chamber record Paganini his music his instruments (Dynamic), the result of the collaboration with the violinist Giulio Plotino and the cellist Clemens Hagen, is made with instruments that belonged to the Genoese composer.

For some years Matteo has been playing the baroque guitar in ensemble with Lorenzo Micheli and Massimo Lonardi: their latest record production Scienziati musici (La Bottega Discantica) has been received with great enthusiasm by music critics.

In 2020 together with the Byron quartet of Geneva, he will record Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco's guitar quintet for the Aparté label.

Matteo Mela teaches at the Conservatoire Populaire de Musique Danse et Théâtre in Geneva and is Artist in residence at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and two American universities, Colorado University Boulder and Columbus State University.  From this year he has been a teacher at the Imola Piano Academy for master's degree courses.
